What a great report! Thanks, Zenobia, for attending and giving us the rundown. We saw these magical creatures in 2015 at Katiki Point and it was a life-changing experience.

Oh wow, I have never seen so many hoiho at one time before! What a wonderful experience to have had. Thanks for sharing your post with me.

Unfortunately the hide is no longer there (or at least, not accessible) as numbers are continuing to decline access to the general public is being more and more restricted. I understand, of course, but I still hope one day that will change.

Thanks for your comment, really appreciate you taking the time to leave your thoughts.

Thanks for answering a question I've had since 2019, when we tried to return to the hide near Moeraki to see the hoiho again. We were shocked that the structure was gone. It still seems odd in light of your explanation since it was very far from the penguins themselves, but folks must have been climbing down into their territory. If true that's terribly sad.

Yes, I believe it's a case of the few ruining it for the many. Coupled with a continuing decline in numbers (starvation and disease apparently the biggest factors) conservationists have made the call to get rid of the hide and, more recently, erect a new fence.
