Some friends took us on a road trip to see Elephant Rocks earlier this year where we saw a thriving population of southern blue butterflies. They seemed to like the dried-up sheep poo almost as much as the abundant clover!
I showed my husband (who is a fair bit older than me) and he said he remembered butterflies like those from when he was little. Apparently he would wait until the butterfly's wings were folded, then pick them up (and presumably release them again - I didn't ask!). Another friend said she remembered the woolly bear caterpillars of magpie moths from her childhood, too.
Quite frankly, I feel a bit ripped off. Imagine what the world could’ve looked like if we'd done a bit more to protect those populations of blues, and magpie moths, and who knows what else?
