There are no native or endemic plant species in our meadowed areas, and for this reason I wasn't sure if it was the ecologically responsible thing to do. Sometimes I feel desperately torn between a desire for a romantic English cottage garden, and a dense forest of indigenous flora and fauna.
One of the main reasons for creating a meadow at all was to reduce mowing, both because of the environmental impact - greenhouse gas emissions, fossil fuel, and reduced carbon sequestration - as well as the stupid amount of time wasted on keeping the grass down. I'd read, and listened to, a fair bit about wildflower meadows before even considering it an option, but most of the data was based on the US and the UK where wildflower meadows occur naturally and include native species.
