I was mulling over Friday’s newsletter, and wondering whether it’s the right time to write about the magpie moth. I guess my reasoning behind it is that autumn’s quite a good time to get a garden going (if you decide to do some planting for the local lepidoptera). I’m also aware that some of you live in the northern hemisphere where your version of the magpie moth (or the monarch, or the admiral…) might be active now.
But still, I wasn’t sure.
As I went outside this morning, camera and coffee in hand, I was contemplating this should I/shouldn’t I conundrum… and a magpie moth went zooming past me, up and away around the corner. I laughed. I couldn’t help myself. It was like the moth was telling me, “I’m here, I’m here! Please keep writing about me!”
A little while later I saw a monarch stop briefly for a feed on a yarrow flower, and another basking on the plum tree above our butterfly garden. I saw a couple more magpie moths later…
